General
Information:
The Norman R. Tilford Field Studies Scholarship fund
was established shortly after Norm died in late
1997 while flying his small aircraft to meet a Texas
A&M University student field trip. Norm was
a leader in engineering geology, a Past President
of the Association of Engineering Geologists, and
a professor at Texas A&M University. He was
dedicated to teaching geology in the field. This
scholarship supports his legacy.
The fund is administered by the Association of Environmental
& Engineering
Geologists (AEG) Foundation. It provides continuing awards,
at least one for a graduate student and one for
an undergraduate student each year. Assisting students
as they learn geology in the field through the AEG
will support the profession of engineering geology
by educating our future colleagues, and cultivate
future members and leaders in the AEG. Recipients
of grants are designated as “Tilford Scholars.”
Applications are reviewed by a committee of professional
geologists. The funds are distributed as grants
to graduate and undergraduate students in support
of field studies. Awards are made to qualified student
members of the AEG based upon demonstrated scholarship,
ability, participation, and potential for contributions
to the profession. Scholarship awardees are also
selected based on their enthusiasm for engineering
geology and their appreciation of the importance
that field experience plays in the professional
growth of an engineering geologist. Click here to view the Charter.
Requirements:
A Tilford Scholar applicant must be a student member
of the AEG. The intent of the scholarship is to
provide financial assistance for field studies.
For undergraduate students, the scholarship would
go toward the cost of a geology field camp course
or senior thesis field research. For graduate students,
the scholarship would apply to field research.
Membership applications (for AEG) may be submitted
with the Scholarship Application form. Visit the
AEG web site at www.aegweb.org
