Bill Smith is a retired geologist from the U.S. Geological Survey who spent most of his career studying landslides and rock slope stability. He received the degree of Geological Engineer from the Colorado School of Mines and Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in geological engineering from The University of Arizona. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Colorado. Bill has been a member of AEG since 1974 and has served as chair of the (then) Denver Section, as chair of the 1989 Annual Meeting, as AEG News editor, Directory editor, and as the AEG Special Publications manager. In 2012 he received AEG’s Floyd T. Johnston Award for service to the organization. He was chair of the AEG Foundation Programs Committee from 2008 to 2017. He served on the AEG Foundation Board of Directors from 2010 through 2015, and as Secretary from 2011 through 2014. He returned to the Board in 2018 and is currently chair of the Finance Committee.
